Armada

Armada
is a series of fifty drawings etched by the artist since 2014, with the use of colored pencils.
Olivier Lounissi developed this serial work from a pondering on the notion of monetary value. Every drawing represents a small paper boat folded from a bank note. The notes are all from different currencies. Over each of the paper boats is drawn the face of the public figure who appears on the original bank note. Though the paper boat's reflection in the water, each face on the hull of the paper boat faces its double. The drawings are meant to be associated as a group. Therefore the boats represent an armada of notes sitting quietly, on a sea oil. The artist refers to concepts of vanity, the art of the portrait and the notion of power of the great and illustrious figures of History on the first level, yet he also invites the viewer to question the value of a work of art.
